Louisville is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It is located in the north-central part of the state along the Ohio River, across from the State of Indiana. The city was named after Louis XVI of France in honor of his support of the Americans during the Revolutionary War.

Louisville is probably best known for Churchill Downs, the site of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, an annual event held on the first Saturday of May.

Louisville is also a center of industry and commerce. Due to its central location at the intersection of three major interstate highways, accessibility along a major river, and mild climate, the city is known as a transportation hub in the area.

Louisville KY LocationThe climate of Louisville is characterized as humid subtropical climate. Summers can be hot with very high humidity; winters are generally relatively mild with snowfall several times a year. Due to its central location in the continent, many weather fronts often converge in the area resulting in severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and sometimes extreme heat and cold.

There are no major league sports teams based in Louisville, though college sports are extremely popular with its residents.
